Mugshot Monday Art

I joined the #mondaymugshotart Instagram challenge to ignite my creative spark and push myself to create art more consistently. It turned out to be a lot of fun! Participating in this engaging challenge not only allowed me to showcase my artistic skills but also introduced me to a fantastic community of fellow artists. The weekly prompts challenged my creativity, pushing me to think outside the box and experiment with different styles and mediums. It's become an energetic motivator that keeps me actively creating beautiful art. This is my latest mug for Week 47 showing the process of transforming a reference photo into a collage.

30 Hikes and 30 Sketches

So pleased, and honestly a bit surprised, to have kept this promise to myself: 30 hikes for 30 consecutive days on the trails in the nearby forest. This 30 Days in the Forest project also included a sketch for each day. Done! While I did fall behind a couple times in the sketching department, very often the sketch for the day was done on the same day; capturing the unique feel of each hike. Sometimes I ran part of the hike; some days just walked, or walked with a friend. Sometimes I included a walking version of the Kirtan Kriya meditation. And since this project has started feeling a bit like a moving meditation, I’ve decided to extend it to 40 days, the traditional number of days to practice a given meditation. I made it there today (honestly, dragged myself) for Day 31 and felt better for the walk. Here’s to 9 more!

Day 29 of 30 Days in the Forest

Almost there! I don’t want to jinx it, but I have nearly made it. Just one more day tomorrow and that’s (finally!) a New Year’s promise kept! Around Day 18, I started to find a style for the corresponding drawings, focusing on the individual plant species. I bring home a sample from the forest, always something that has fallen to the ground. I use it as a sort of stencil, painting directly over it, and then layer the color and details on top.

One more day tomorrow and I’m complete! Thinking of rounding up to a nice, yogic 40 Days!

30 Days in the Forest

In January, my inbox filled up, as it does every year, with well intentioned self-improvement offers. 30 days to a new you, etc. And I did sign up for a 30 day free yoga offer with equally good intentions. But then I had that nagging feeling: I just know I won’t stick to it. Largely because after all the staying home of the last two years and that I continue to work primarily from home, I did not need another activity to do at my house. I needed an activity to motivate me to get out of the house every day. Then one day in the forest, taking my standard two-mile hike that I usually do a couple times per week, I came across a horse and rider. While I frequently see the evidence of horses, I don’t often see the

actual horses themselves. Meeting one close up was thrilling; horse and rider just seemed so alive. Then it struck me that I could do my own 30 day program: 30 Days in the Forest. Same path, every day. For 30 straight days. And then draw something, anything, that I had seen in the forest that day. What would happen? Would I feel better at the end of it? Sleep better? Draw more?

Now here we are; Day 20; i’m actually sticking to my promise to myself. I did substitute one hike on Blake Island on Day 6. But considering that hike was more than four times as long, I decided it counts.
